There are three types of reset that exist on the iPhone, namely hard reset, soft reset and reset without using iTunes. In a soft reset, the system does not erase the data on the iPhone while a hard reset will erase the data completely.

If you want to sell your iPhone to someone else or make the iPhone settings return to the first time you bought it, you can do a hard reset.
Hard Reset is a way to completely reset your iPhone. Your data, such as photos, videos, notes, existing apps will be lost and your iPhone settings will be restored.

So, when you buy a new smartphone, you can simply restore the data from iCloud and Finder.
Here are the steps to perform a hard reset:
Click Settings, then select General. Look for the section "Reset."
Select the required reset. For a hard reset, you can select Erase All Content and Settings. If your iPhone has a password, you will be asked to fill it in and confirm the erasure.
Wait for the process to finish. After that you will be asked to enter the Apple ID password. This is done so that the account and Find My iPhone are deleted on the device.
