The chat will still be there, provided you backed up the WhatsApp chat before you changed the number. However, make sure beforehand that the new number you want to use is active so you can receive SMS and calls.

Change the WhatsApp number without changing the account.
- Make sure that the new WhatsApp number is installed.
- Open the WhatsApp application.
- Tap the Settings option in the bottom right corner.
- Tap on the Account option.
- Tap on the Change number option.
- On the home screen, press Next.
- Enter the old number and the new number. When you have clicked Next.
- On the confirmation screen, tap Done.
- You will be prompted to confirm the OTP that will be sent to the new number.
Done.
After the process to change the number is complete, you can restore WhatsApp chats (if you have a previous backup).
