The always-on display is one of the absolute highlights of the new iPhone 14 Pro devices. The feature ensures that information such as time, date, widgets, notifications, and background images are displayed even when the iPhone is idle so that the user can always see them.

With the help of special energy-saving measures such as lowering the refresh rate to 1 Hertz (i.e. one frame per second) and dimming the screen, the battery should be spared.

However, it cannot be ruled out that the always-on display has an impact (albeit a small one) on the battery life.

If you don't need the function anyway or want to tease every percentage point out of the battery, you can simply switch it off.

The feature is activated by default and must therefore be switched off manually. Although Apple also speaks of "always-on display" in this country, the function has been given a slightly different name in the settings, adapted to the German language. You can disable the option as follows:

  • Opens the Settings app.
  • Go to "Display & Brightness".
  • Tap on the switch next to "Always on" so that it appears grayed out. Finished!

The always-on display turns itself off

For all those undecided regarding the use or non-use of the Always-On function: As part of a new support document for the Always-On Display, Apple has announced further information on the energy-saving methods of the panel.

To save battery, the screen goes completely black even in always-on mode if the following cases occur:

  • The iPhone is on the display.
  • The iPhone is in the host pocket or in a pocket.
  • The sleep focus is on.
  • The energy-saving mode is activated.
  • The iPhone is connected to CarPlay.
  • The continuity camera is used.
  • The iPhone has not been used for a while.
